07/28/2008 9:24 AM - Now that Lambuth has been offcially accepted as a NCAA Division II member, the real work begins.
The Eagles are scheduled to fly from the NAIA to NCAA D-II in 2010. They are hoping to get membership in the Gulf South Conference at that time. To get considered for the GSC< however, the school must make some major adjustments to their facilties.
First up on the list: a new football stadium. Lambuth AD Ken Brown says plans should be ready by mid-August for a a stadium that can seat anywhere from 7,000-12,000 fans. The school's current facility, Fonville Field, has room for roughly 2,500 spectators.
An exact price tag has not been placed on the stadium, but Brown said the money will come from private fundraising and not from the Lambuth's general money pool.
The funds will come from a combination of private donations and money raised from the Eagle Club. "I have never seen a final cost assessment," Brown said. "If we put something on paper and the number sounds high, we might start trimming different things. We are not at that point yet."
Brown said he and other staff members have visited Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at Ole Miss to meet with their architects.
The new facility will be on the same site as the old stadium and practice field.
