A downtown Regina domed stadium could benefit both the province and the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but a crucial part of the formula -- a funding plan -- is missing.
A C$1-million study commissioned by the Riders, the province, the federal government and the city concluded that there was enough market demand for a C$386-million domed stadium in downtown Regina. Besides use by the CFL's Roughriders, the 33,000-seat facility (capable of holding upwards of 53,000 for large events and concerts) would host concerts, conventions and other events. If the facility hosted 31 events yearly -- including 11 Riders games -- it could turn a profit after debt service.
The study was promoted by the Riders concluding they need a new home. Mosaic Stadium opened in 1910, but its been upgraded over the years.
The study didn't address one major piece of the puzzle: how to fund the project. Local politicians say several revenue streams would need to be hobbled together to assure enough funding.
Provincial leaders say they'll be ready to make a decision on a stadium plan by the spring. If approved, stadium construction could begin in 2011 and done for the 2014 CFL season.
